Far North Queensland School Talks
In May Marjorie and Leah visited schools in far North Queensland to talk about careers in architecture! They travelled to Mossman, Cairns, Dimbulah and Mareeba, to show students what a career in architecture is like, how architects integrate technology (3D headset was a favourite) and what other career opportunities are possible in design and construction.
We tried not to scare off the school kids by dwelling on the 8 years it takes to get through study and get registered quickly… We focused on how fun our day-to-day job is, from designing a house to a pub, meeting with clients, collaborating with engineers, understanding building contracts, to being on site and working with builders – being an architect keeps you on your toes. No day is the same and everyday involves chatting about exciting projects, problem solving and keeping everyone in the loop for a successful project.
Thanks to the Business Liaison Association in Cairns for inviting us to participate - we had a great time and children in grade 7 got most of our jokes - thankfully!
After a rewarding two days visiting schools we extended our road trip to the Daintree which delivered a true FNQ experience - waterfalls, tropical rain, beautiful architecture, crocodiles and cassowaries!
We also had the pleasure of catching up with our favourite Cairns architects - POD. Shaneen, Belinda and Ellen put on a delicious spread at their office rooftop, shared some of their exciting community engagement projects and gave us some great tips for the Daintree!
